Stress, change, and uncertainty are part of daily life.
Nervous system literacy helps us meet them differently.
While we can’t always control what happens, we can deepen our literacy in how our nervous system works.
This literacy gifts us something precious… the ability to notice what state we’re in, to learn some ways to take care of ourselves and then choose how we respond.
Our nervous system is always scanning for cues of safety or threat.
> When we feel safe → we can think clearly, be creative, and connect with others.
> When we feel unsafe → our system moves into fight, flight, or shutdown.
These protective states aren’t wrong, but the problem is when we get stuck there or when we react in the moment in ways we may later regret.
Nervous system literacy can help us recognise our signals (tight chest, shallow breath, heat in the body, flatness in energy) and practise simple ways to return to regulation.
> A longer exhale to settle.
> Bare feet on the earth to ground.
> Hands on your heart
> Reaching out for co-regulation with someone you trust.
Over time, these micro-practices can widen our “window of tolerance” and build resilience. And this isn’t just personal. Families, teams, and organisations carry nervous system patterns too.
Nervous system literacy isn’t about eliminating stress. It’s about building the capacity to meet life with presence, creativity, and care. It’s about moving from reactivity to response-ability.
Here’s a simple framework I use called the Cycle of Response-Ability:

- Name what’s happening in your body
- Recognise the state you’re in
- Practise small tools that bring you back towards regulation
- Pause to create space for choice
